Residents of Lokoja cry out as price of cooking gas skyrocket

Consumers of cooking gas in Lokoja, Kogi State, have expressed concern over the rising cost of the commodity.
Liquefied Natural Gas, otherwise known as cooking gas, has been a clean and fast means of cooking in many Nigerian homes.

Early last month, Nigerians were taken by surprise following the gradual increase in the price of the commodity.
One kilogram of the product a few months ago which was sold between three hundred and three hundred and fifty Naira now goes for five hundred and fifty Naira.
Some consumers in Lokoja, Kogi state capital lamented over the price increase describing it as unbearable.
According to them, the hike in price is coming at a time when Nigerians were facing economic hardship.
A housewife, Hajia Aisha Yusuf, noted that the increase has affected her family budget, making her consider other means of cooking.
On their part, Haruna Mustafa, Blessing Samuel and Thelma Peters explained that the increase was unfair and unacceptable, calling on the government to act fast to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
During a visit to DOA Gas Station, phase two, Lokoja, the Manager, Mr Achile James attributed the increase to additional value-added tax as reintroduced by the Federal Government on the importation of liquefied petroleum gas.
A senior staff of the Yisab Gas plant, Mr Isah Musa, said the increase in the cost of cooking gas has affected sales.
When contacted, the acting Controller, Department of Petroleum Resources in Kogi State, Engineer O. G Ogbe, stated that the increase was as a result of the Federal Government’s regulation on the price of gas.
With the increase, if nothing is done by the Federal Government to reduce its tax on the product, many Nigerians may be forced to seek other alternatives to the use of gas.
