As part of post insurgency recovery efforts, President of the Senate, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan on Thursday flagged off the reconstruction of the Wachakal Airstrip in Yobe State.
Addressing stakeholders at the occasion, Lawan stated that the project was designed to expand the runway and upgrade other facilities at the airstrip to accommodate small and medium aircraft.
“This airstrip was in existence before and what we trying to do today is to bring it back to life in a major way. Because the runway is going to be extended to take small and medium aircraft.
“I believe this airstrip will not only give opportunity to our security agencies, for whom we doing this in the first place, but also improve on the economic activities of this part of the country.

“This part of the country, Yobe in particular is an agricultural state. This airstrip will provide an avenue for our business people to evacuate their products.”, he said.
Speaking also at the occasion Gov. Mai Mala Buni said the project signifies the importance and commitment of the federal government to execute the project and put it to use for the benefit of Yobe people.
Buni said the project had huge potentials and opportunities especially for farmers, the business community and the people generally.
“The airstrip will no doubt boost agricultural production and trade in the agricultural products especially, rice, millet, sesame seeds and livestock as local and international merchants may use the airstrip.”, Buni said.
Buni commended president Buhari administration for the ‘generous approval’ of the airstrip and other capital projects to the state.
Buni also described the senate President as a “worthy ambassador of the state” for attracting federal projects to the state.
The Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika said the project was part of the transformation agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to move the nation’s economy and to improve security situation in the country.
