The authorities of Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in Lagos State, have issued a 21-day ultimatum to traders and shop owners at the popular Ijegun market to vacate the place.
The authorities asked the traders to leave because they are planning to put in place new structures for the traders.
According to feelers received by our reporter, the council wants to build an ultra-modern market.

Some of the traders and shop owners who spoke to our reporter on Monday, October 18, 2021, said they’ve been asked to leave their shops and sheds on or before November 5, 2021.
It was noticed that some of the market women were afraid to speak out. In a conversation among the women selling vegetables, they were complaining that the 21 days given will not be enough, adding that the council could have given them till next year to leave.
When asked if the council will provide a temporary alternative space for them to continue with their trades, one of the shop owners, Chinedu, who sells crayfish, dried pepper and other foodstuff said the council did not provide an alternative place for them, adding that they were just asked to leave.
To get more facts on the matter, our reporter headed to the council secretariat where he was directed to the information officer. When asked if there is any such development, the person in charge said she was not aware of any ultimatum given to the traders at the market to leave.
But a notice from the council was pasted on the wall in one of the shops in the market with the title; ‘Quit Notice’.
The notice read, “The Local Government is by this letter giving you a quit notice on the space you are occupying/selling.
“You are hereby given 21 days from today 13-10-2021 to move all your properties from this building.”
This may bring untold hardship to many residents in the area as this is the only market serving the whole community.
