Hushed tales, a poem by Fatima A.Y.M
We remember our yesterday’s with smiles,
Live our today’s in ease on isles,
Plan our tomorrow’s with hopes and guiles…
They don’t.
With roofs over our heads, we snore,
Opening fridges to drink and chow,
In our dreams, we swim and row,
They don’t.
Denied the necessities of life,
They exist in pain and strife,
Their jugular veins cut by a knife,
Not blunt.
Such a sharp killer knife it is,
Representing every weapon there is,
Snuffing out the life of peace,
In a hunt.
A hunt so savage it shames,
Burning compassionate hearts in flames,
Lit by the brutal bearers of names,
So gaunt.
On the plains of Palestine and Syria,
Stricken Yemen, and even Nigeria,
Lay a horrifying bloodied myriad,
Of bones.
Torrents of bullets fall in a deluge,
On helpless civilians painted rouge,
By the blood of the martyred and the sieged,
In homes…
Houses destroyed, families scattered,
Lands occupied, roads untarred,
As the world turns blind to what mattered,
Unfazed.
In evacuated cities, they roam,
Internally displaced without a home,
Their eyes turn and mouths foam,
In hurt.
Unable to afford,
The basics of the world,
They cower without a word,
Of hope.
As some shovel massive funds,
Into hidden foreign accounts,
They starve to death, ignored,
By most.
When Humanity is but a body,
Where a part shouldn’t be gaudy,
Leaving another, unworthy,
To be clothed.
Yet, survival becomes a race,
With the strong overpowering the helpless,
Abusing power, imprisoning the righteous,
In cages.
Crime soars, doom looms,
As youth abandon sheds and looms,
Running berserk, sparking booms,
Of death.
Recruited as terrorists, some say,
Or bandits, if you may,
Like hounds, they foray,
Untamed.
And the masses, paralyzed,
By fear, sterilized,
Made too numb to rise,
For truth.
In this pulsating atmosphere,
Most fold hands, rear,
Only theirs, leaving bare,
The unclothed.
Sponsored or brainwashed?
Ignorant or flushed?
Why else are these tales hushed
Like night?
