Kano State Gov’t may reduce marriage cost

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Zahara’u Mohammed Umar has hinted that the Kano State Government may enact a policy that will subsidise the cost of marriage in the state so that thousands of ladies and divorcees roaming the streets will be married off.

According to her, if one sees the statistics of divorcees and widows in Kano State, it is frightening, because under such conditions it is difficult to check prostitution, or young ladies and divorcees taking to alcoholism and drug abuse.

The Commissioner stressed that she is making this statement because of one appeal she read from Fauziya D. Suleiman, a philanthropist and social commentator, where she was calling on the Kano State Governor to subsidise the cost of marriage by cancelling the (Traditional Lefe) and dowry should also be reduced to the barest minimum so that it can be affordable.

Similarly, the commissioner indicated her willingness to work together with Kano State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr Baba Impossible, who has been campaigning for this for a long time. She said this is the only way Kano State will have sanity among its citizens, especially the state being a Sharia state.

“It’s worrisome; people are facing hardship, the poor should know that they are poor, if you give out your daughter by collecting small dowry without subjecting the husband to do ‘Lefe’, the marriage will last because nobody has suffered in the process. We will approach Kano State House of Assembly with the approval of the governor to enact this law”.
