In a bid to end all forms of sexual assault and harassment by lecturers in tertiary institutions, the Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to sentence lecturers found guilty of sexually abusing students to 21 years imprisonment.
According to reports, the Nigerian Senate led by Senate President Ahmed Lawan read for the 3rd time “The Sexual Amendment Bill (2020 as amended)” and approved 14 to 21 years imprisonment as punishment for sexual abuse of students.
The sexual amendment bill was said to be read before the floor of the senate three times where stern warnings were reeled out as warning signs against lecturer’s abuse on students.
In the bill, the lecturers in higher institutions must not date, friend or have sexual intercourse with any student and any intention to go against it is a 14- 21 years jail term according to this law endorsed by all stakeholders of the education industry apart from the ASUU who felt the law is against their members.
While passing the law, the senate adjusted the law to all schools including primary schools, bosses at work, directors, HODs, supervisors, chairman, councillors and conductors.
