Why Buhari should be impeached over fuel subsidy – Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano
The former Emir of Kano and former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has stated that the constitution of Nigeria allows President Muhammadu Buhari to be impeached for paying millions of dollars on fuel subsidies without an appropriation from the National Assembly.
Sanusi stated this while speaking virtually as a panellist on sustainable development goals at the just concluded Nigerian Economic Summit held in Abuja.

Every year, according to him, “the government spends millions upon millions of dollars on fuel subsidies without appropriation. This is enough ground to impeach the President, but nobody is holding them accountable, the National Assembly is not performing its functions”, he said.
The former CBN Governor noted that the Federal Government’s populist approach was hurting the nation. He called on President Buhari to take the right decisions because the country is running a populist government instead of a developmental state.
Those in government, he added, must understand that “there are times you have to make decisions not because they are popular but because they are right. We have to decide to run a developmental state not a rental state or a populist state.
“We are pursuing a populist policy-we want to have cheap fuel, cheap electricity, a strong naira that is populism. At the end of the day, what price are we paying by taking money out of education in order to subsidise petroleum products?”
I have said this before even when I was CBN Governor under Jonathan’s government, in 2015 or 2016, Minister Ibe Kachukwu said Nigeria was importing 30 million litres of PMS per day after eliminating corruption. In 2019, NNPC said we are importing 59 million litres per day after oil prices have gone up, and have been asking, he said, what happened between 2015 and 2019 that our oil consumption has almost doubled? We don’t follow the constitution in discharging our duties that is why I am calling for the impeachment of the President for constitutional breach”.
