How gunmen attacked UNIABUJA, abducted professors, others

Gunmen have attacked the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) staff quarters in the early hours of Tuesday and abducted six persons, comprising two professors, one senior lecturer, and three of their family members.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIABUJA Chapter, Dr Kassim Umaru, confirmed the incident and the abduction to journalists.

Those abducted were identified as Professor Obansa and his son; Professor Oboscolo, his son and daughters, as well as Dr Tobins.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 1 am at the senior staff quarters in Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Channels Television when they visited the scene, the invaders forced their way into the houses of their victims through the windows, before abducting them.

In one of the houses, the ceiling and windows were broken while books, clothes, and other wares were littered on the floor, the medium reported.

A colleague of one of the abductees – who does not want his name mentioned – said the operation lasted over two hours, with heavy gunshots.

However, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh has confirmed via a statement that about six persons were carried into the forest by the assailants.

She stated that the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Babaji Sunday has dispatched additional tactical and conventional policing resources to the university’s main and satellite campuses, as well as the staff quarters and other affiliate formations of the university, “to fortify security, improve public safety and protect citizens in and around the university community.

A joint team of security operatives comprising personnel of the police, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), are already at the scene, according to reports.

The CP called for calm and noted that the security personnel are already working with the locals in the area toward rescuing the victims. He assured that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.
