How bandits killed Sagir Hamidu – Brother

Muhammad Sirajo Hamidu, brother of the late Sagir Hamidu, former All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial aspirant in Zamfara State, has narrated how his brother was killed at the hands of the bandits.

Reports had gathered that bandits on Sunday, around 3.30 pm in Rijana, Kaduna-Abuja expressway, killed Hamidu and kidnapped scores of travellers.

Narrating the incident to reporters, he said his brother, alongside his police orderly, and two others were travelling to Abuja before they were ambushed.

”My brother, his orderly with two other persons alongside his driver were travelling to Abuja for an urgent issue. They were ambushed by bandits along Rijana, Kaduna Abuja expressway in broad daylight.

”When the driver discovered they were bandits, and not security operatives because they all wore army uniform. The driver made a U-turn. Unknown to him, he was already in the midst of kidnappers who had already positioned themselves along the road. They opened fire on the occupants of the vehicle. My brother was shot on the chest and leg. His driver disappeared unhurt,” he said.

He added that the bandits captured his brother’s orderly and took him into the bush with other passengers.

He said by the time passers-by came to the scene after the operation, they found his lifeless body.

According to him, the funeral of the late politician will take place in Abuja after Asr prayers today (Monday).

However, the governor of Zamfara, Bello Matatwalle, said he had received news of Mr Hamidu’s killing with shock.

The governor’s spokesperson, Yusuf Idris, in a statement said the deceased was one of the promising politicians in the state.

The governor said the deceased had a good vision for the enhancement of self-reliance, especially among the youth.

“Sagir Hamida will be remembered for his various contributions to the political and socio-economic growth of the state where he left a wide gap that will be difficult to fill.

“Death is inevitable but losing a worthy son like Sagir Hamida is a great loss and very painful and his contribution will remain indelible in the minds of the people of the state.

“The governor also extended his heartfelt condolences to Gusau emirate Council, his immediate family, the good people and government of Zamfara and prayed to Allah to give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss,” the statement said.
