Lagos 3rd Mainland Bridge intact, traffic safe – FGN certifies

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has affirmed that the Lagos Third (3rd) Mainland Bridge is intact and therefore safe and sound for use by motorists.
This was contained in a statement signed and issued late Monday by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWH), Boade Akinola.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Engr Olukayode Popoola, who stated this in Lagos, dismissed a report that had trended on the social media in recent times claiming that the bridge had “opened up” and “shaking” after the rehabilitation works done on it as mere misleading and unfounded insinuations.
Giving an on-the-spot report on the bridge, the controller, who said he just drove along the Bridge without noticing any opening or experiencing any shaking as contained in the social media report, advised members of the public, especially commuters, to ignore the insinuations as to the bridge, which is receiving regular attention along with others across the country, is safe for use.
In response to reports of vibrations and joint expansions of the Third Mainland Bridge, the federal government had engaged contractors who carried out major repair works beginning from the third quarter of the year 2020 on the all-important bridge, leading to its partial closure at one time or the other before it was finally reopened early this year.
Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, the others are the Eko and Carter bridges. It was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed.
The Third Mainland Bridge starts from Oworonshoki which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi expressway and Lagos-Ibadan expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.
