Maria Oredola Igbinedion, the mother to two-term former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, has reportedly been killed by one of her maids.

The 85-year-old woman from Usen, in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, passed on, on Thursday, December 2 at her home in Ugbo, Benin-City, the Edo State capital at the age of 85.

However, preliminary findings revealed that the maid employed to live with and attend to her needs strangled the octogenarian, ransacked her home for pieces of jewellery and money before disappearing into thin air.

Maria had remained confined to a wheelchair since her 80th birthday, unable to move around, just managing to stay alive.

Family sources confirmed that efforts are being made to track and apprehend the killer thief who is reportedly from Cross River State even if it means going to her village to arrest her family members.

Maria was the first wife of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom.

She was survived by four children including the former governor, Bright, Patience and Philomena as well as grandchildren.

Meanwhile, the burial arrangement for the Octogenarian has been announced by the family.

According to the burial programme sighted Friday night in Benin, service of songs will be held for the deceased on Thursday, 9 December, 2021.

She will be interred on Friday, 10 December, 2021, after a funeral service at St. Augustine Catholic Church, by Water Resources Off Ugbor Road, in Benin.
