The District Head of Dambatta died in the early hours of Friday, December 3.

His death was announced by the Dambatta youth group on its social media handle.

Deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi I appointed Mukhtar Adnan as Sarkin Bai in 1954 to succeed his father.

Adnan who is the longest-serving member of the Kano Emirate Council since the establishment of the Emirate in the 19th century, was born in 1926, attended Dambatta Elementary School, Kano Middle School and Zaria Clerical School and later started working with the Kano Native Authority where he served in various capacities before his elevation to the position of Sarkin Bai.

He served for 63 years as District head, Councilor and Kingmaker. He participated in the selection of Emir of Kano Muhammadu Inuwa (1963), Emir of Kano Ado Bayero (1963-2014), Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II and the current Kano State Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero in 2020.

The President in a statement issued Friday by his media aide, Garba Shehu, said his demise represented the fall of a colossus with a remarkable record of service.

In his tribute to the 95-year old kingmaker, the President said the late Sarkin Bai Kano was “an immense historical figure who loomed large in our political and cultural affairs.”

According to him, “Mukhtar Adnan’s record of serving the Kano Emirate for 63 years and as a Chief Whip in the First Republic Parliament, qualifies him to be one of our greatest historical players and actors in the evolution of Nigeria.”

He said the Sarkin Bai would not only be remembered for participating in the selection of five Emirs in the Kano Emirate, but also for his contributions to the development of our democracy.

“I’m proud to say without any fear of contradictions that Mukhtar Adnan belongs to the golden age of our democracy when the main motivation for politicians was selfless public service rather than the desire to amass wealth. One of Wam Bai’s remarkable virtues was his tested and untainted integrity,” Buhari added.
