Nigerian gov’t signs MoU with Sokoto, Bauchi to boost access to electricity

In the quest to realise the objectives of the Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP), the Federal Government of Nigeria has agreed to collaborate with governments of two states, namely Sokoto and Bauchi states, to boost access to electricity, especially in the underserved or unserved rural communities, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with them.
This was contained in a statement signed by the ministry’s Senior Information Officer, Mathew Dan’asabe, on behalf of the Deputy Director (DD), Press and Public Relations.

Minister of Power, Engr Abubakar Aliyu who was playing host to the energy commissioners from both states at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja affirmed the commitment of the federal government to provide reliable power supply to unserved and underserved communities in rural and peril urban areas of the country.
Engr Aliyu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Nebeolisa Anako, said in signing the MoU with the Sokoto and Bauchi state governments, the federal government had committed to ensuring that the economic sustainability programme comes to reality.
He further stated that the federal government planned to install 5 Million Solar Home System (SHS) and Mini-Grid by which 250,000 jobs would be generated to impact over 25 Million beneficiaries across the states in Nigeria.
Responding, the Commissioner of State Ministry of Energy, Sokoto State, Aliyu Balarabe, conveyed the gratitude of the the Governor of Sokoto State to the Federal Ministry of Power for signing of the MoU.
Speaking also, the Commissioner of State, Power, Bauchi State, Maryam Garba, appreciated the Federal Ministry of Power and saying his ministry was taking advantage of the federal government’s plan to provide electricity to unserved and underserved communities.
Sokoto and Bauchi states were the first to sign this kind of MoU.
