Mrs. Ame Onyelo, a laboratory scientist who survived a severe gas explosion on New Year’s day, has died.

The explosion left her with 90 percent degree burns and was said to be in a state of 50-50 chance of survival before she was rushed to the Government Hospital, Abraka.

Mrs. Onyelo, who was transferred later to the Central Hospital, Warri and thereafter to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), gave up on Tuesday at about 1:30pm due to the severity of the injuries she sustained.

Confirming her death, Dr. Donald Anyoru, the Medical Director (MD) of the government hospital, said the news of her death came as a rude shock.

“The management visited the family of the deceased in Abraka today (January 4, 2022). She was a nice woman, very cooperative and a peacemaker.

“I have been here for about a year now and I can say that she is one of the few people, who you can discuss issues with. We are sad,” Anyoru said.
