How Adamawa man was tortured to death over suspicion of stealing mobile phone

Adamu Ahmadu, 27, who was wrongly accused of stealing a mobile phone has been tortured to death by a trio of murderous thugs working on the instruction of his boss, Hamidu Umar in Damare-Lagire, Yola, Adamawa State.

According to the victim before his untimely death, he went to see his supposed boss, Hamidu, had a conversation for a while prior to the arrival of a female guest to see the erstwhile boss.

Hamidu, who took his female visitor to his second house, later returned and claimed his mobile phone got missing.

Adamu quickly began searching for his boss’ missing phone, which he couldn’t find. His boss then invited three violent-looking men to mercilessly beat Adamu until his ‘missing phone is produced’.

They started beating the victim, who kept pleading innocent. His boss, Hamidu, was later heard saying “if he didn’t produce my phone, kill him” (as narrated by the victim).

According to Adamu, the trio predated on him till they broke his two hands using planks, broke his head using cement block, pierced his chest and upper abdomen using pointy woods until he eventually fell into coma.

It was after all the battering that one of the thugs went to the other house where Hamidu took his aforementioned female visitor and found the mobile phone.

Adamu was rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Yola for treatment, after some good Samaritans made a case at Wuro-Hausa Police station Yola. Adamu was responding to treatment at the hospital when the case was filed at Damare Arewa court, Yola.

The perpetrator was ordered by the court to pay the sum of seventy thousand Naira (N70, 000. 00), as a compensation for the medical bill spent by Adamu’s family while at the hospital. An order the perpetrator and his family trivialised and refused to obey and boasted never to even pay the bedridden Adamu a visit.

After some days, Adamu’s health deteriorated and he died.

The case, which was earlier filed at Damare Area court, was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Yola.

The deceased’s boss, Hamidu Umaru was arrested alongside one of his hired thugs, while the other two are still at large. The case is still being heard at the High Court, Yola.

Adamu, prior to his tragic and untimely death, was a father of two, a husband and was the breadwinner of the family as his parents were both old.

Adamu’s mother, bereft of her only son, narrated afterwards how her son would hustle and bustle everyday to put food on the table. “With Adamu murdered, our family is crippled, we have no one to go to” she exclaimed in tears.
