Police discover shallow grave of student tortured to death by teacher in Kano

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

The police in Kano have discovered a shallow grave after a tip-off, where a teacher in a borstal home tortured one of his students to death and buried him in a shallow grave.

The incident is coming a few weeks after another teacher in a private school, named Abdulmalik Tanko kidnapped and killed a 5-year-old student named Hanifa Abubakar. The case has already undergone two sittings in a Magistrate court in Kano, which have been adjourned till the 9th of this month.

The police officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, has told the press that apart from the teacher some of his workers were also arrested by the police because they are also linked to the torture of the deceased who was brought to the borstal centre to learn the Qur’an and be of good moral behaviour.

SP Kiyawa added that for a very long time the teacher whose name was not disclosed by the police has been operating an illegal borstal home at Na’ibawa Yan lemu in Kumbotso Local Government. Parents used to take their children to the centre for Qur’anic and citation, but the owners of the centre used to subject the pupils to all sorts of torture and punishment.

Kano State Commissioner for Islamic Affairs, Dr Tahir Adamu Baba, visited the centre and after briefing the governor of what is happening there, the governor gave him the permission to get people to go and dig out the boy from the shallow grave and this was done just like the Hanifa Abubakar’s case.
