Two chiefdoms fight over Maisamari district in Taraba

Story from Ahmed USMAN, Jalingo

Ngoroje and Kamkam Chiefdoms on Mambila Plateau in Sardauna local government area of Taraba State are at loggerheads over the ownership of Maisamari district.

The two chiefdoms were among the newly created and upgraded chiefdoms and districts by Darius’s led administration in what he called an attempt to fast track development across the state.

However, the status of Maisamari district remain a major source of concern among the two chiefdoms which led to the establishment of Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the boundary demarcation of Maisamari on whether it falls within Kamkam Chiefdom or Nguroje Chiefdom on 7th February, 2022.

The Commision which is Chaired by Justice Joel Agya is saddled with the responsibility of looking into the controversies surrounding the Maisamari area and to ascertain the actual Chiefdom to which it falls under.

In its inaugural season in Jalingo, the chairman, Justice Joel Agya disclosed that during their assignment, they would examine all historical boundaries documents relating to the actual traditional status of Maisamari and which of the chiefdoms it falls within as well as determined the current most appropriate boundary demarcation between Kamkam and Nguroje chiefdoms.

He noted that the commission is also saddled with the responsibility of determining the remote and immediate causes of the rivalry and confusion between the two chiefdoms and to determine whether Maisamari is ripe to be created as a chiefdom of its own

Justice Agya further added that the commission is to identify the lapses in the instrument establishing the two chiefdoms as well as ascertain the extent of damages and hostilities occasioned between the two chiefdoms and make recommendations to the state government, to appreciate traditional jurisdiction to administer Maisamari and its surrounding settlements.

According to the chairman, the commission has so far received six memoranda dressing that the submission of memoranda has been closed while the public hearing commences on the eighteenth of February, 2022 in Jalingo.
