Ten years after conception, Sanwo-Olu to commence Badagry deep seaport project

The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has informed the people of Badagry that the Deep Seaport Project which was conceived 10 years ago would commence under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

The governor made this known at a stakeholders meeting during his visit to the city of Badagry on Tuesday.

According to the governor, the project was conceived to open up Badagry at Gberefu and to drive up socio-economic development in the environs.

The seaport will be sited on 1,103 hectares,and on completion, will have the deepest draft and widest berths in Sub-Saharan Africa and will be able to berth large vessels likethe 400-meter-long Maersk Triple E class with a carrying capacity of 18,000 TEUs, the governor noted.

“Our administration is working to deliver the Badagry Deep Seaport Project in 4 phases under a PPP arrangement that includes the supporting roles of the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

“This is not just a project; it is a multi-level opportunity for the progress of all the people of this State,in view of the volume of trade and quantum of investment opportunities that would spring up whenthe project commences,and when it is completed and operational.

“Big congratulations to the Management of Badagry Port Development Limited and the host communities for being collaborators and joint beneficiaries of this laudable project which would positively impact lives and businesses,create wealth and improve standards of living in the Badagry division of Lagos State.”
