Okada riders rob painter of N5 million in Abuja (Photos)

Commercial operators of motorcycle, otherwise called okada have allegedly robbed a painter of money amounting to five million naira on Tuesday evening in the Lugbe area of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

According to the President of Federal Housing Authority, Youth Association, (FHAYA, Lugbe along Airport Road) Abuja, Engr. Mazi George Chidi, ” The pianter Deji Bakare collected 5 million naira on Tuesday evening for a painting contract, put the money in his car and was driving home when the Okada riders started honking and calling him thief.

“He parked at Total junction to explain that he was not a thief, but a mob descended on him and hit him with a stick on his head. In the mob action, they stole the money and disappeared into the night.” He said.

Similarly, the association wrote a request to the FCT Commissioner of Police saying “several people has been killed, while others sustained life threatening injuries and properties have been stolen by the motorcycle riders in the community.

“In view of this, we urge you to use your good office to stop the operation of these Okada and replace them with tricycle (KEKE) riders for now to avoid more unlawful activities and unrest in FHA Lugbe Estate.

Engr Mazi George Chidi said that the association is requesting for action from the authorities within two weeks to avoid breakdown of law and order.

It could be recalled that recently, Mr Tosin, a estate agent was hacked to death by the Okada riders. They once also set a Vehicle Inspection Officers, (VIO) car ablaze for arresting some of their members.

The Okada riders do not have an executive from their union to respond to the allegations.

But some of them agreed that there are bad elements who parade themselves as Okada riders.
