Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema stole the night on Wednesday with a hat-trick in the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match leaving hosts Chelsea a herculean task for the return leg next Tuesday at the Bernabeu.

Madrid started with a high spirit in the first half of the game opening score line in the 21st minutes and another three minutes later courtesy of Benzema.

Kai Havertz reduced the deficit to 1-2 five minutes before the half time break.

Benzema who was relatively hungry for goals capitalised on Senegalese Edouard Mendy’s mistake who vacated his area and played an under-hit pass to Antonio Rudiger and with the presence of Benzema in the area he did justice to the ball by slotting it into the back of the net.

Substitute Romelu Lukaku wasted two chances which could have given the Chelsea the upper hand but he was not lucky.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich failed to score for the first time in 31 UEFA Champions League games as Villarreal had the day at home with a 1-0 narrow victory.
