2023: Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, joins Presidential Race

Story from Ademola ADEBAYO

The Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Wednesday declared his intention to contest for president in 2023 on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fayemi, who made the declaration in Abuja, said he would revive hope and build a world of fate for the common and the greater good of the country.

The NGF chairman said he decided to throw his hat in the ring after a thorough self-introspection and wide consultation.

“After a careful consideration of where we are as a nation, I believe that my entry into the race will offer Nigerians the opportunity to examine competing visions for national rebirth.

“This is not a decision which I have taken lightly. Indeed, to arrive at this point, I carried out a long and deep self-introspection with the help of close family, friends, and colleagues, including my wife and devoted partner, Erelu Bisi Fayemi.

“I am a full-blooded child of Nigeria, i can boldly and confidently say, let us as one people dig deep into our history and hearts to revive hope and do the work of faith that will get us to the greater good,” Fayemi said.

He decried the high level of insecurity, poverty and youth restiveness across the country and promised to tackle them headlong if elected into power.

“It is out of unity and cohesion that we have always found the strength to transcend all barriers, defend our freedom and dignity, scale new heights, and provide leadership for Africa,” he said.

The declaration speech which was themed; “That Nigeria May Prosper” was delivered by the Ekiti state governor amid roars and cheers from his teeming supporters.

“We must, as a people, make the choices that will ensure that our nation is able to prosper in peace, unity, safety and security in the comity of nations,” he said.

As Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has continued his engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) most significantly in the commitment to the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
