FG to restore power to Borno, environs in weeks

Story from Abah ADAH

Minister of Power Engr Abubakar Aliyu has disclosed that power supply would be restored to Maiduguri, Borno State in the coming weeks.

The Minister gave the hint during a courtesy visit by the Vice Chancellor, Borno State University, Prof. Umar Kyari Sandabe who led his management team to his office at Power House, Abuja, according to a statement signed by Odutayo Oluseyi, Assistant Director (AD), Press in the ministry.

It was gathered that the electricity tower was destroyed on January 26 in the Mainok area along the Maiduguri/Damaturu road by the insurgents.

Residents of Maiduguri and neighbouring communities in Borno State have been without power for two weeks after Boko Haram terrorists blew up supply lines from the nation.

Chronicling the operations of the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), Engr Abubakar said that all efforts were in top gear to restore power to the area, adding that “it is expected to be concluded in about 6 weeks” time.

He said Independent Power Plants projects are being handled through the policy on off-grid and mini grid, adding that the mini-grid would adequately cater for all renewables.

The Minister further directed that the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) explores ways by which the state universities would benefit from the Energising Education Policy of the federal government.

Speaking earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sandabe appreciated the Minister for his unrelenting efforts at reforming the power sector.

He said the institution has been out of power supply since 2020 due to the insurgency.

The university, according to him, has been on generators which take a huge sum of its funding, adding that the generators, despite consuming huge sum of their funds do not provide adequate needed electricity power for the university operations.

He craved the consideration of the Minister to ensure that power supply be restored to the university, promising that the institution would secure all power projects within its premises.
