Kogi CP identifies drug intake, abuse as major push factors for crimes

The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Egbuka, has identified drug intakes and abuses as the major push factors responsible for several crimes committed by criminals arrested by the Command.
The Commissioner disclosed this when he received officials from a Non Governmental Organisation known as the Community Anti-Drug Abuse Advocacy Initiative (CADAAI) as part of activities marking the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse.

CP Egbuka lamented that drug abuse and intake has eaten deep into the fabrics of the society, explaining that most criminals usually arrested by the command always confess to committing the crimes under it’s influence.
The Commissioner added that most crimes committed in other parts of the world as proven by research most time is drug motivated, he expressed the commands readiness to partner organisations like CADAAI and other organisations in the fight against illicit drug abuse.
He explained that after the completion of the primary elections, the next phase is where political thugs are usually influenced by drugs to cause destruction and violent crisis.
He urged CADDAI to step up her efforts in the advocacy and sensitizing of the youths on the dangers of drug abuse.
The Police Commissioner, however, solicited the help of well meaning individuals and organisations to partner with the police in preaching against drug abuse, noting that the dangers of drug abuse cannot be overemphasised, that it destroys families and society.
The Commissioner expressed worries that the high rate of drug abuses, if not curtailed, would have negative consequences on the society and called on parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and agencies to take the preaching against drug abuse with the seriousness it deserves, adding that, when drug abuse is curtailed, the country will be a better place.
Earlier in his remarks, the Kogi State Co-ordinator of CADAAI, Mr Cheniba James, said the global observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse was to raise awareness on the major problem that illicit drugs represent in the society.
He lamented that illicit drug abuse and intake has become a time bomb steering the society in the face.
While advocating that all hands must be on deck to address the menace, James added that drug intake and abuse not only truncate destinies of young people but also causes death in many cases.
Highlights of the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse observed by CADDI Kogi State Chapter was a road walk along major cities of Lokoja, with members carrying placards inscriptions warning against the dangers of drug intake.
