ASUU Strike: Nigerian gov't gives committee three months to renegotiate with union

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Professor Adamu Adamu, has hinted that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be suspended next week.

He disclosed this while speaking at the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund meeting recently.

Adamu said the executive arm of government had commenced plans to ensure it honours the agreement between the federal government and ASUU.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Jibrin Barau, commended the Minister for efforts made by his Ministry so far towards ensuring that the situation is resolved and the strike action called off.

Neptune Prime reports that the union commenced a 4-week total and comprehensive strike to press home their unresolved demands on the federal government on February 14, 2022.

The union after the expiration of the 4-week warning strike on March 14, extended the industrial action by another 2 months, hinging it on the lack of seriousness on the part of the federal government to address the issues.

Several attempts at negotiations between the union and the federal government have proven futile with both sides accusing each other of insincerity and unseriousness.

ASUU on May 9, further extended its ongoing strike by another 12 weeks, to give the government enough time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.
