Court detains prophet for raping 13-year-old girl brought to him for prayers in Akwa Ibom

Justice Basset Nkanang has detained a 32-year-old prophet, Godson Thompson, in Akwa Ibom State in the Uyo custodial centre for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl who was brought by her family to him for prayers.

The prophet who is a native of Ikot Offiong Nsit in Nsit Ibom local government area was accused of raping an SS1 student of a government secondary school in Uyo.

The victim disclosed to the court that her in-law took her to the church at Information Drive, Uyo and when he left around 6 pm, the prophet took her to his house, where she was raped overnight.

She said the accused, who is a father of three children, gave her a bucket to urinate inside the house in order to prevent her from going outside.

According to her, her in-law had told her that he will be back by 7 pm to take her home. When her in-law left, she overhead the prophet making a phone call and few minutes later, a tricyclist came in. The prophet asked her to get into the tricycle saying he was going to pray for two more persons alongside with her.

“When he was done praying for the first and second person we trekked to the main road and he stopped a tricycle, we both entered it and at a certain point, the tricycle stopped and he said I should wait for him. We landed in the prophet’s house where he brought out a black liquid substance in a plastic bottle and drank before raping me”, she disclosed.

She also added that she had used sanitary pads for two weeks because she was bleeding.

The victim who also stated that she saw ladies’ pants in different colours and pictures of women inside the prophet’s house, said she escaped when the prophet forgot to lock the door of his house and she ran to a church where she was rescued.

The case was adjourned till August 1, 2022, for the continuation of the trial.
