FGN trains North-East, Plateau farmers on wheat production

Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Gombe

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has organised a one-day training for wheat farmers drawn from the northeast region and Plateau state on the best practices in wheat production.

Declaring the training open in Gombe State, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammed Abubakar, said the training was timely considering the ongoing Russia/Ukraine war which has affected wheat availability.

Represented by the Zonal Director of the ministry, Umaru Yusuf, the minister noted that products from wheat are the most consumed foods in Nigeria.

He added that its value chain is quite large as it can be processed into a different range of foods including pasta, bread, and noodles among others.

While urging the farmers to grow wheat in large quantities, the minister explained that the training would also acquaint them with modern techniques on wheat farming and storage as well as marketing.

He urged the participants to put into practice the knowledge they had acquired during the training because of the immense benefits attached to wheat farming.

In his goodwill message, the National President of Wheat Farmers Association, Dr Salim Saleh, described wheat as crude oil in disguise because of the economic benefits its production will accrue to the country.

Represented by Mr Elisha Mohammed, he commended the federal government for introducing wheat farming and urged farmers to embrace it because of its huge market potential.
