Story from Ibraheem Hamza MUHAMMAD, Lafia
An officer with the Nigerian Police Force (name withheld) has been arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old niece in Nasarawa State.
Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nasarawa State branch, Barrister Rabiatu Addra, disclosed that a whistleblower informed them that the victim was allegedly raped by her uncle, who she is staying with.
She said, “When we received the information, our Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response team lodged a formal complaint to the Police that led to the arrest of the alleged randy inspector.
“We took the rape victim to the hospital and paid for her treatment but she lost the six-month-old pregnancy.
“The state government through the Ministry of Justice foot the bill for a DNA test as part of investigation to get medical evidence.
“FIDA is always ready to promote and protect the rights of women and children. We are appealing to victims of rape or other forms of abuse to speak-out.” She said.
Barrister Rabiatu Addra said the teenage victim has been discharged from the hospital and has been reunited with her parents.
She said that they are committed to getting justice for the girl when the suspect is prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
Efforts to seek for reaction from the Nasarawa State Police Command proof abortive.
