Buhari visits Kuje correctional centre, to jet out to Senegal afterwards

President Muhammadu Buhari has visited the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja to see the extent of destruction terrorists caused during an attack on Tuesday.

The president is also expected to depart Abuja to Senegal to participate in the International Development Association for Africa Summit.

The trip comes a few hours after terrorists opened fire on a presidential convoy, killed an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, and attacked Kuje Prisons, freeing hundreds of inmates, including those held under charges of committing acts of terrorism.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Garba Shehu, states that the President is expected to join other African leaders in an open Dialogue on Development Challenges and priorities as well as transformational initiatives that will lead to an outcome document, the Dakar Declaration.

In the late hours of Tuesday, 5 July 2022, the entire nation was thrown into tension when bandits gained access to the Kuje Correctional Centre and took control of the entire environment.

Sources said a high-capacity bomb went off around 10.25 pm. It was followed by the second and third blasts and sporadic gunshots that left the residents scampering into safety.

The Kuje attack came on the same day a convoy of cars carrying the advance team of security guards, protocol, and media officers ahead of President Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah came under terrorist attack.

Also, on the same day, terrorists ambushed and killed an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Aminu Umar while leading his team on a clearance operation in Zakka forest, Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Though security operatives have assured that reinforcement has been activated and urged citizens to remain calm, details of the three attacks still remain sketchy.
