Police apprehend fake soldier while extorting money from tricycle rider in Adamawa

A fake soldier, Paul Shaltha, has been apprehended by men of the Girei Division of the Nigerian police on Sunday while extorting money from a tricycle operator who allegedly violated traffic regulations in Adamawa State.

Paul, 22, a resident of Sabon Gari, Sangere FUTY in Girei Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended by the operatives of the command who were on patrol in the locality.

According to a statement made available to newsmen, image maker of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Sulaiman Yahya Nguroje, said the operatives arrested the suspect while on patrol to ensure safety and security at Sangere FUTY.

“The operatives apprehended the suspect who was sighted parading himself as a military man threatening and extorting money from members of the public”, Nguroje said.

According to him, the suspect confessed to having extorted one Micheal Stephen, a tricycle operator who allegedly violated traffic rules.

He stated that the Commissioner of Police CP S. K. Akande had ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) CP’s Monitoring unit, Public Intelligence Bureau (PIB) to descend on such people of questionable character.

“The CP has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police to immediately take over the matter and ensure discreet investigation as well as the prosecution of the suspect to serve as a deterrent to others”. He said.

Akande also appealed to the general public not to hesitate in reporting men of suspicious character around their neighborhood to the nearest police formation or via emergency telephone numbers: 08089671313, 32718318, and 08036617428.
