FGN commences distribution of relief materials to flood victims in Jigawa

Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Investment, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk has flagged off the distribution of relief materials to affected victims of the flood disaster in Jigawa state.

Speaking during the flag-off, the minister said that it was part of the federal government’s gesture to sympathise with the affected communities in the state.

Hajiya Umar explained that, upon receiving the news of the unfortunate flood incident, president Muhammad Buhari directed the ministry to activate the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to join hands with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to access and respond by providing immediate support to the affected persons in the affected communities.

The most affected communities the ministry identified in the state are Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, Balangu, Birniwa, Kiri–Kasamma, Kaugama and Malam-Madori local government areas were identified as the most affected communities.

“I’m not unmindful of the solidarity and support provided by community leaders, cooperate organisations and well-meaning public-spirited individuals,” Hajiya Umar said.

The minister then urged other authorities particularly in the state and local governments to support the victims.

She also flagged off the federal government cash grant to vulnerable groups in the state.

The minister said about 5,000 vulnerable will benefit from the grant across the 27 local government areas in the state.

According to her, the cash grant of 20,000 each is one among the many federal government programs to uplift 100 million Nigerians from poverty.

Hajiya Umar however called on the beneficiaries to boost their businesses adding that they should vote wisely in the forthcoming general election.
