BESDA enrolls 52,898 girls, Almajiris into schools in Adamawa

No fewer than 52,898 girls and Almajiri children have been enrolled to school in 12 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State against 34,757 originally planned for by the Better Education Services Delivery for All (BESDA).
BESDA coordinator, Dr Mohammed Digireji, disclosed this at a one-day sustainability planning conference in Yola.
He said that the programme will end by October 2022 in the state and urged for its sustainability.
Digireji said a lot of improvement has been made in the enrollment of out-of-school children, which has improved literacy rates in the state.
“100,510 out of school children were earlier profiled, 2,620 teachers’ guide books provided, 2,620 recruited teachers trained, and allowance for six months for NFLFs 1,308 paid.
“In addition, the provision of uniforms and sandals to 51,205 pupils”, he said.
According to him, a monthly stipend of N5,000 is been paid to Alaramas at designated Tsangaya targeting 400 beneficiaries.
He added that about 40,868 successful children were mainstreamed into formal schools in the state.
Dagerii said some of the challenges the programme encountered include lack of support from some stakeholders, hard-to-reach and security challenges in some areas as well as inadequate funding.
Dr Salihi Ateequ, Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), commended BESDA coordinator for the job well done.
He said that the state government is committed to the development of education in the state.
According to him, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has approved the employment of additional 2,000 teachers to boost teaching and learning in the state.
Adding that those to be recruited will be fully qualified teachers.
Ateequ further warned teachers not to compromise the standard of education, adding that any one found wanting would be sacked from service.
