Court adjourns sitting over case of Chinese who killed Kano girlfriend

Story from Shafa’atu DAUDA, Kano

The arraignment of the Chinese National, Geng Quarong, who stabbed to death his Kano girlfriend, Ummulkhuksum Sani Buhari, has suffered further delay as the Kano court sitting over the case adjourns.

Neptune Prime recalls that on the 29th of September 2022 when the Defendant was brought to court for arraignment, he pleaded for an adjournment to enable him to contact his counsel to represent him in the trial.

The Prosecution counsel led by Kano Attorney-General, Musa Abdullahi Lawan, did not object to the plea of Quarong to adjourn the case, noting that the issue of legal representation in a case of alleged culpable homicide is fundamental.

Consequently, the sitting was adjourned to 4th October 2022 for arraignment.

When the court resumed Tuesday for arraignment, the defendant appeared together with his counsel, Barrister Muhammad Balarabe Dan’azumi.

Prior to the arraignment by the Kano Attorney-General, Abdullahi Lawan, the defence counsel urged the court to provide an interpreter of English Language to the Chinese to enable the defendant to face his trial comprehensively.

He cited Section 36(6) A, B and E of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and section 237(2) of Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2019 of Kano State.

He further said his application was to prevent his client from being ambushed, who doesn’t understand the English language as a language of the court.

In his response, the Attorney-General said even though, the defence counsel raised a constitutional issue, regarding the interpreter, he said the Defendant spoke good English last time when he was brought to court.

“We will write to the Embassy of China Republic in Nigeria to provide an interpreter at the instant of the Defendant,” the Attorney-General submitted.

The case was then adjourned to 27th October 2022 for arraignment.

He similarly ordered the defendant to be remanded in Correctional Services.
