IPOB/ESN members lay siege on Onitsha-Owerri road, set vehicles ablaze

A federal road, on the Onitsha-Owerri axis was reportedly taken over by some gunmen on Thursday night and 10 vehicles were set ablaze.

According to Osazuwa Akonedo Blog, the gunmen started the attack simultaneously in Ekwusigo area of Anambra State and Mgbidi community in Imo State around 11pm.

Some of the vehicles set ablaze were mostly commercial luxury buses, trailers, and trucks with crude oil, fifty feet containers, and open bucket lorries filled completely with goods which amounted to billions of Naira.

Also, some vehicles were attacked between Ekwusigo and Okija river in Anambra state.

One of the cars was seen turned upsidedown, and completely burnt to ashes.

Tankers conveying crude oil were partially attacked and their tires deflated while other trucks filled with goods were set on fire.

Residents in Amorka in Anambra state and Orlu junction at Mgbidi community in Imo said they heard sporadic gunshots between the hours of 11pm on Thursday night till 4am on Friday morning.

However, no life was lost during the attack, according to the residents saying the gunmen forced the passengers and drivers to disembark from the vehicles before setting the vehicles ablaze.

Some other residents faulted the claims that no life was lost during the attack.

The residents said some of the road users were kidnapped at Ekwusigo, and two persons have been killed.

“If you enter Azia community, through Onitsha-Owerri road, after the river, you will see two fresh dead bodies. It is unknown gunmen who took them, killed them and dumped their bodies there”, one of the residents said.
