Chairman of Neptune Prime’s editorial board, Professor Mohammed Khalid Othman, a certified engineer, has been inducted as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution Of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Othman, a professor of Agricultural Engineering was among 17 engineers inducted as fellows during The Fellowship Induction and Public Lecture event held on Friday, 11 November 2022 at the National Engineering Centre NSE Headquarters, Abuja.

The conferment ceremony under the distinguished chairmanship of Engineer Tasiu Saad Gidari, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, was chaired by Deputy President, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engineer Margaret Oguntala, and attended by captains of industries, leaders of government organisations, academic intellectuals, and other distinguished personalities.

Delivering a lecture on the topic: “Agricultural Engineer: The Core but Un-utilised Solution Provider in Nigeria”, the guest speaker, Engineer Umar B. Bindir, said the agricultural engineer is an innovative and entrepreneurial asset that should be tapped by the government to create viable solutions for the development of the country.

Bindir called on the Nigerian government to work closely with engineers and harness their potential and technical know-how in rebuilding the economy.

Speaking to Neptune Prime shortly after his induction, Professor Othman thanked the Almighty God for the recognition to be a Fellow of NIAE which has elevated him to the highest level of membership of the professional body.

Commenting on how an agriculture engineer can become a solution provider to Nigeria, Professor Othman said the profession is wide and full of opportunities that should be respected because it focuses on converting resources into value-added elements like food, energy, and others.

Professor Mohammed Khalid Othman (MNSE, MNIAE, MASABE, MISTRO) popularly called MK Othman is a Professor of Agricultural Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU Zaria). He is the Executive Director of National Agricultural Extension Research and Liason Services (NAERLS) ABU Zaria.

He is a member of governing boards of IAR, NAPRI, DAC, member ABU Council, member ABU Microfinance, Chairman Board of NAERLS Suites, Director of Gulf and Inland amongst others.

He was born on 22nd July 1962 in Bindawa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

He attended Bindawa Primary School on 1st September 1977. He then proceeds to Government Secondary School Funtua in 1982 for his secondary education and then to the School of Basic Studies/ABU Zaria in 1983 for IJMB certificate.

He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 1988, and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, followed by ENGREF (Science of Water on continent; Hydrology/Hydraulics) in Montpellier, France in 2002. He, however, bags his Ph.D. in Irrigation Water Management in 2007 from Ahmadu Bello University.

Prof. Othman enjoys writing and has a weekly column, “Deep Thoughts” in Blueprint Newspaper. He also writes for Neptune Prime Newspaper and other online media.
