Argentina on Saturday night ended Australia’s World Cup dream following a 2-1 loss to the South Americans.

The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute after Lionel Messi reactivated his left leg with a strike to the far-right corner in the midst of five Australians in the box in their own box to put Argentina ahead before the break.

Julián Álvarez doubled the lead after a poor pass back from Rowles putting the goalkeeper under pressure inside his area and Alvarez got the ball back and slotted into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Australia got one back on a platter after Enzo Fernández mistakenly repelled Goodwin’s effort from 25 yards on wrong-footing as the ball rolled into the net for an own-goal to make it 2-1.

Argentina have a date with the Netherlands on Tuesday for the Quarter Finals.
