Governor Buni emerges Housing Friendly Governor of the year

Story from Ademola ADEBAYO, Abuja

The Executive Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency Mai Mala Buni, has received the award for Housing Friendly Governor of the Year, in this year’s Africa Housing Awards held in Abuja.

The Governor emerged as the winner of the award following an online voting process on the portal of the organisation and subsequent screening by a panel of judges.

The Africa Housing Awards is an annual event in recognition of individuals and organisations who have performed exceptionally well in housing during the year under review. It celebrates and promotes excellence in the housing and construction industry. It also recognises the success of firms, individuals, and teams.

The Buni administration in Yobe State has constructed over 2,000 housing units across the State, being the single largest housing intervention in the history of the over 40-year-old state.

It will also be recalled that Governor Buni while presenting the 2023 budget to the state House of Assembly last month, announced a subsidy of 50 percent to all beneficiaries of the houses.

Workers, pensioners, and other categories of beneficiaries had commended the Governor for his magnanimity and for making them proud house owners.

Receiving the award on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor of Yobe State Honourable Idi Barde, thanked the organisers of the award and reiterated the governor’s commitment to affordable shelter for the people of Yobe State.

Amongst the Yobe delegation was the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Ahmed Mirwa, Commissioner of Housing Yobe State Alhaji Bukar Dauda, North East Development Commission Coordinator (Yobe State) Professor Ali Abbas amongst others.

In his remarks, Africa’s Affordable Housing Advocate and convener of the ceremony, Festus Adebayo, said the Africa Housing Awards seeks to demonstrate the importance of strategic collaboration that fosters innovations, promotes and reward initiatives that address a real need, and provides affordable, disaster-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable housing in Africa.
