Indonesian new law prohibits extramarital s3x, limits criticism against president, public institutions
Lawmakers in Indonesia have passed a contentious criminal code that prohibits extramarital sexual intercourse and raises penalties on abortions as part of legislation that sparked violent protests when introduced in 2019.
According to Bloomberg, parliament passed the bill at a plenary session on Tuesday, which also adds limits to how much people can criticize the president and public institutions. The bill also restricts the rights of LGBTQ citizens.
The bill now awaits Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s signature followed by a three-year transition period and the law will fully be in place.
