Kano court sentences Abduljabbar Kabara to death by hanging for blasphemy

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

A Kano Upper Shari’a Court sitting at Kofar Kudu, Kano State, has sentenced Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, to death by hanging for blasphemy.

On Thursday morning, residents of Kano woke up amid tight security mounted in all strategic places, especially in the court premises where the case was to be delivered to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

When the Judge finally arrived at the court premises, he went to his chamber briefly and later, entered the hallowed Chamber of the Court and settled down to deliver judgment amid silence and law and order.

After extensively delivering the judgment, Justice Sarki Yola, now adjourned for a very short break for him to deliver the judgment of the day, at this juncture, lawyers to Abduljabbar stood up and pleaded with the judge who already read that Abduljabbar was found guilty on all counts of charges to tamper Justice with Mercy, but Abduljabbar intervened and said he does not want any mercy from the Court.

Justice Sarki Yola then went into his chamber and later came out to deliver the judgement, in which he said the accused has in his actions insulted the holy prophet of God and has also defamed many holy men of God as such, he is hereby found guilty and therefore sentenced to death by hanging.

Speaking after the verdict, Abduljabbar said: “My Lord, after I heard how you twisted all my evidence, you turned all my submissions upside down, you have assigned words to me that I have never said, deliver your judgment, I am not asking for any leniency, I want my followers to know that I will die as a hero and I don’t want you Justice Ibrahim Yola to do me any favour of granting me any leniency, this is all I can say”.

It could be recalled when the Kano State Government arrested Abduljabbar Kabara for insulting the prophet, a committee of Ulamas was set up that debated extensively with him on his position in Islam, especially on the prophet, but he was so adamant that the state government had to charge him to Upper Sharia Court where he was today sentenced to death by hanging.

Meanwhile, security is tight in Kano and there is no breakdown of law and order as at press time.
