KACRAN salutes NASS, Gov. Buni, ACF, appeals for extension of naira dateline
The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has commended members of the National Assembly, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) for demanding the extension of the dateline for the withdrawal of old naira notes.
Following the 31st January dateline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the change of naira notes nationwide, Nigeria’s National Assembly, Governor of Yobe Mai Mala Buni, and other stakeholders have appealed to the apex bank to extend the withdrawal deadline to July 31, 2023, due to the difficulties accessing banking services by rural dwellers in most parts of the country and the scarcity of the new notes in circulation.
KACRAN in a statement signed by the national president, Honourable Khalil Mohd Bello, lauded Buni for being the only Governor out of the 36 governors in Nigeria to call on the CBN to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of old currency.
Neptune Prime recalls that Governor Buni has stated that only three or four local governments out of the seventeen local governments in Yobe State have easy access to banking services, which has made it impossible for the people who are known nationwide to engage in commercial activities like farming and cattle rearing to meet up the deadline.
The herders association also commended members of the National Assembly based on the outcome of a joint session by the two Chambers held on 14 January 2023, where they unanimously called on the CBN’s Governor to as a matter of utmost importance save Nigeria’s economy from collapse by extending the dateline for depositing old notes to June 2023.
“Truly, the honourable members of our National Assembly acted promptly and deserve the highest commendation not only by Kulen Allah Cattle Rearer Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) but by all well-meaning Nigerians.
“At this crucial time, they proved to Nigerians and the entire world that they are good representatives who are there to defend the interest of the people as well as the nation’s economy.
“It is in line with their courageous and patriotic actions that, on behalf of the entire members of our association and other good people of Nigeria we passionately wish to appeal to them to kindly remain resolute in their very strong legislative stand and defend/safeguard the interest of their fatherland and that of the masses, by making sure that they mount excessive pressure on the President to force the Central Bank Governor reverse his decision.
“What we are humbly advising them to do is, since (he) CBN governor is saying there is no going back on the ultimatum for the withdrawal of old currency notes, they should therefore use their legislative power to make him do the needful that will satisfy the generality of Nigerians. The majority of Nigerians are calling for the extension of the period for the withdrawal of the old currency notes to December 2023, Bello said.
The statement said KACRAN will continue to encourage the legislators who acted accordingly in the interest of the people they represent.
“We view the actions of the National Assembly as an act in strong defence of the Nigerian masses, in our last press statement, KACRAN called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Central Bank Governor due to his unacceptable stance to ignore the appeals of well-meaning Nigerians to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of the old currency notes.
“And by this commendation from millions of the members of our association, we hope that the members of our national assembly, who are the representatives of the people will continue with their good work to make sure that the deadline fixed by Central Bank Governor is extended to a meaningful time, whereby no Nigerian will suffer any loss of his hard earnings.
“KACRAN highly regards what governor Mai Mala Buni did as a show of genuine concern for the untold hardship of his people due to the Central Bank Governor’s decision to not extend the dateline for the withdrawal of the old currency.
“We also wish to express our excitement about Arewa Consultative Forum’s appeal through their spoke person Dr Hakim Baba Ahmed for the Central Bank’s Governor to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of the old currency to a reasonable time that will enable the people of their region, who are less educated to exchange their money with the newly introduced naira notes.
“More so, KACRAN members would be most highly affected by the decision of the CBN governor to not extend the withdrawal period because our members will incur unbearable losses. This is why we once again passionately appeal as we did in our earlier press statement that the date for the withdrawal of the old currency is extended to December 2023.
“In addition, we want to thank all Nigerians that are helping in one way or the other through various means to make sure that the dateline is extended so that people will be out of total confusion and uncertainty about such an unpopular policy.
“In conclusion, we want to call on all Nigerians to join hands to appeal to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari to save his people from the extreme difficulties, hunger, and uncertainties of the highest order most Nigerians are going through,” Honourable Bello said.
