The Need For A Holistic Approach To Development In Africa: Lessons from alternative models, by Baba Abdullahi Machina

Africa is facing a development crisis, and despite decades of efforts to follow the Western model of development, poverty, inequality, and poor economic growth continue to persist on the continent. The reality is that the Western model, based on liberal democracy, free markets, and individualism, may not be the most suitable solution for Africa’s unique challenges and needs.

There are alternative models of development that offer valuable lessons for Africa and these include African Ubuntu philosophy as well as models based on Asian values such as a strong state and market-oriented development, the model of African Ubuntu philosophy, which emphasizes community, cooperation, and mutual support.

This philosophy values the well-being of the community over the individual and recognizes that people are interconnected and interdependent in Africa, this model of development has been successful in promoting social cohesion and improving the standard of living of communities.

However, there are countries that have successfully adapted elements of the Western model to better fit their own needs and contexts. Examples are Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The countries are both small, resource-poor countries that have achieved rapid economic growth and development by adapting the Western model to their own needs, focusing on building strong institutions and creating a favourable environment for business and investment. They have also leveraged their geographic positions to become hubs for trade and tourism, further boosting their economies.

One of the key lessons that Africa can learn from the experiences of Singapore and UAE is the importance of focusing on building strong institutions and creating a favourable environment for business and investment which is a by-product of quality leadership and this can involve investing in infrastructure, improving governance, and fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Another important lesson is the importance of leveraging unique advantages, such as geographic position, to drive economic growth and development. Many African countries such as Nigeria have untapped potential in areas such as agriculture, tourism, and mineral resources, which can be leveraged to drive economic growth and development and lift people out of poverty.

While the experiences of Singapore and UAE offer valuable lessons for Africa, it is also important to recognize the limitations of simply copying their models of development as each country is unique, and what works in one place may not work in another as both the African Ubuntu philosophy and the Asian model of development offer valuable lessons for Africa.

A holistic approach that takes into account the unique challenges and needs of each country is necessary and the approach should recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution and that each country must find its path to development based on its history, culture, and resources.

Therefore, the need for a holistic approach to development in Africa cannot be overstated and by combining elements of traditional African values, Asian values, and the Western model, Africa can create a development model that is tailored to its own needs and realities and that promotes sustainable economic growth and social justice for all its citizens on the continent.
