Atiku suspends PDP Rivers rally over insecurity

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has put on hold campaign rally for Rivers State, due to insecurity.

Atiku in a statement issued on Monday through Rivers PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) said the rally billed for this week after earlier previous repeated postponements would no longer hold.

The statement by Senator Lee Maeba, PDP PCC Chairman in Rivers, noted that, “The expected victory of Atiku Abubakar does not worth the blood of any Rivers man or woman.”

This is coming after the Director-General of the PDP presidential campaign council in Rivers State, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, alleged that some security personnel attached to the state government made an attempt on his life on Thursday, February 9, 2023.

According to Dr. Sekibo, his car was riddled with bullets and the venue of the proposed rally set on fire, while security watched the inferno.

“As we approached the site, those policemen who were watching the inferno opened fire on our vehicle. I looked at the Hilux vehicles, they were police Hilux vehicles attached to the Governor of Rivers State.”

Recall that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike was unhappy after losing out of the party’s presidential primaries in July 2022 and demanded that the party’s chairman, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu should step down since a northerner had emerged as the party’s flag bearer and allow for southerner to take over the leadership of the party as enshrined in its constitution.

This, has however yielded no result in the party.
