Cash Crunch: I’ve run out of food stuff, Senator Uzor Kalu laments

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has lamented the continuous scarcity of the naira in the country as a result of the currency redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District while reacting to the current cash crisis said his family could not get enough money to cook.
The former governor of Abia State said this on Monday during his appearance on Channels Television programme, The 2023 Verdict, monitored by Neptune Prime.
“You can see the policy is right but I don’t keep money in my house. I am suffering,” he said.
“The other day, my house manager told my wife in Abuja that we have no money to cook food. My wife was virtually roaming around and we feed over 250 people every day. It is a problem to me and to everybody.”
The chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be latest among the party’s big wigs that has publicly spoken on the scarcity of the naira since the apex bank had insisted on the February 10 deadline.
It should be recall that the Supreme Court ordered that the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes were still valid, following the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari last week Thursday, February 16 in his national address only extended the usage of the old N200 note till April 10, 2023, rendering others as non-legal tenders.
This, however, did not go well with some governors of the ruling APC who maintain that the old naira notes should be used in their states.
Weighing into the matter, Senator Kalu shared the same view with the governors, saying that he would have obeyed the Supreme Court’s order on the naira notes if he were the president.
He said, “This is why if I am in the position of Mr President as I have told you before, I will listen to the Supreme Court judgement.
“The Supreme Court to me, whether they are right or wrong, Mr President should obey the law and ask his Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, to put a review to the Supreme Court.”
He assured that APC will come out victorious at the polls amid the cash crunch which some of the governors including senators had claimed it would affect logistics during the elections.
