Borno State was the heartbeat of North East Nigeria before the advent of Boko Haram in 2009, being the epicentre of the insurgency, the effects of Boko Haram terrorism have crippled social, political and economic activities in the state.

Borno is renowned for producing great leaders, intellectuals both within and outside Nigeria.

The first Nigerian promoted to the rank of Captain in British Army (1953) after making a gallant performance in 1st and 2nd World War was Cpt Kyari Magumeri.

The first Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Nigerian Defence Academy (1964) was Major Bulama Biu.

The first Governor of Northern region (then was 19 states from 1962 to 66) was late Sir Kashim Ibrahim.

The first Inspector General of Police from Northern Nigeria, and the only IGP in Nigeria that served for a long period of up to 9 years (1966-1975) was IGP Kam-selem.
