Mavericks in Motion: Yobe State University Students Win Hult Prize on Campus with Sustainable Fashion Idea
The Hult Prize on Campus competition was held on 18th February, 2023 at the Yobe State University, Damaturu, with great enthusiasm from participants and spectators alike. The event began with a speech by Saeed Muhammad Lawan, the Campus Director of the competition, who briefed the audience on the Hult Prize Foundation and the processes of the competition.
Following Saeed’s speech, Salamatu Iliyasu, a fashion designer, delivered a powerful speech on Fast Fashion, highlighting the negative impact it has on the environment and the people who work in the fashion industry. Salamatu’s speech set the tone for the competition, encouraging the participants to think critically about the sustainability of their business ideas.
Fifteen teams participated in the competition, each with a unique and innovative business idea. The teams pitched their ideas on stage in front of a panel of judges, who assessed the feasibility and sustainability of each proposal. The judges had a difficult time deciding, but in the end, the “Mavericks in Motion” emerged as the winner.
The Mavericks in Motion team impressed the judges with their innovative idea focused on using digital printing technology to reduce water and dye usage in the fashion production process.
Digital printing is a more efficient and sustainable printing method than traditional screen printing, as it uses less water and fewer chemicals. Additionally, digital printing allows for more precise and detailed designs, which can create unique and sustainable fashion items.
The team won the competition and qualified to compete in the regionals, where they will compete with other universities. After the competition, members of the press club held a panel discussion on the introspection of fashion.

The discussion was thought-provoking, with the participants delving deep into the impact of fashion on society and the environment. The panelists explored the role of fashion in shaping cultural norms and the need for sustainable practices in the industry.
