The highly anticipated match did live up to expectations with great fireworks from the two sides but at the end of the 90 minutes Madrid showed the stuff they were made of.

Hosts, Liverpool started off early on as Darwin Nunez had his name on the score sheet and ten minutes later, Mohammed Salah doubled the lead for the Reds.

Meanwhile, Brazilian star, Vinicius Jr who scored the only goal in last year’s final resurrected hope for the Blancos to reduce the tally to 2-1.

The undefiled Carlos Ancelotti boys leveled the scoreline courtesy Vinicius in the 36th minute to make it 2-2.

Another Brazilian, Éder Militão, increased the tempo at Anfield to put Madrid on the lead.

The Jurgen Klopp from the back of things had little or no inspiration to contend with Madrid as Karim Benzema nailed the coffin with two superb goals in the 56th and 67th minutes for a deserved 2-5 victory in front of over 54,000 fans.

Tonight’s loss for Liverpool means a greater task lies ahead for Klopp ahead of the second leg mid March.
