Violent protest rocks Abeokuta over scarcity of redesigned naira notes (Video)
Residents of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital have taken over major roads and streets in the city to protest the hardship of accessing the redesigned naira notes as the CBN dateline draws near.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed to The Nation, said officers were monitoring the situation to prevent the destruction of property and loss of lives.

However, the protesters were said to have turned violent as hoodlums tried to vandalise banking halls and ATMs.
The Sapon branch of First Bank was vandalised as the protesters attempted to set it ablaze.
Aladesanmi, Fajol, and Somorin in the bank area of Abeokuta were all taken over by the protesters, making bonfires and chanting anti – CBN songs.

Neptune Prime recalls that the Central Bank of Nigeria with the approval of President Muhammad Buhari recently redesigned the N200, N500, and N1000 naira notes to enable security agencies and relevant bodies to monitor the circulation of cash in the economy and checkmate corruption.
However, the policy has turned into a nightmare as citizens face untold hardship while trying to obtain the newly introduced bank notes and meet up with the February 10th dateline when old naira notes would cease to be recognised as legal tenders.
