Imo State ex-Transport Commissioner, Okafor-Anyanwu handed three-year jail term for embezzlement

A former commissioner for Transport in Imo State, Laz Okafor-Anyanwu has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for the diversion of N180 million, and illegal and fictitious award of contracts.

Prosecution counsel, Barrister Eze Okafor had told the court that while Okafor-Anyanwu, served under former governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha as Commissioner for Transport, he supervised the management of the state owned transport company, Imo Transport Company (ITC) which under his watch nosedive and went bankrupt.

The once sought after company was run aground and staffs owed salaries for years under Okorocha, while the vehicles in the fleet disappeared.

Justice Lewanya of the Owerri High Court found the former commissioner guilty of awarding fictitious contracts to himself and cronies, the diversion of N180 million, amongst other criminal activities.

Further, the jurist ordered him to return the looted funds to the coffers of ITC.
