UN condemns gruesome killing of 26 Borno fishermen by ISWAP
The United Nations (UN) has condemned the gruesome murder of 26 fishermen by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.
This was disclosed in a statement by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Matthias Schmale.
Schmale sympathised with the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery.
He said the victims of the heinous attack were fishermen and farmers eking out a livelihood in a very insecure environment.

The UN coordinator termed the attack as another horrific reminder of the insecurity that internally displaced persons (IDPs) and others affected by 13 years of armed conflict in the region encounter on a daily basis.
He recalled how the community was abandoned prior to the attack as a result of the activities of the heavily armed criminals.
Schmale called on the relevant authorities and security agencies to investigate the crime and prosecute the culprits.
“I remind all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians from harm,” he said.
Neptune Prime reports that militants of ISWAP tortured and killed 26 fishermen in an attack in Mukdolo village, Gamborun Ngala area of Borno.
A security source said the ISWAP fighters ambushed, tortured, and killed the fishermen on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
However, at least nine of the fishermen managed to escape from the scene while three sustained bullet wounds, while the gunmen reportedly surrounded, tortured, and killed those who were unable to escape.
