Several construction workers narrowly escaped death on Wednesday evening when a seven-storey building under construction collapsed in Banana Island, Lagos State.

According to reports, the workers were carrying out casting work on the seventh floor of the unapproved building when it caved in, injuring those on site.

Confirming the incident, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, stated that the building was unapproved at the time of the collapse.

Sanusi said: “Few who sustained injuries are being treated. There were no fatalities. This unfortunate incident happened while casting was being done.

“The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, was immediately on site to assess the situation and flag off the investigation. We ask members of the public to remain calm and expect further information from the ministry as we know more”.

Meanwhile, in a statement released by the Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, it was reported that several workers were trapped in the collapsed building at Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to him, the agency is mobilising its staff and other first responders to the site for a rescue operation.

Farinloye said: “We just received a report that a 7-storey building under construction at Banana Island, Ikoyi, just collapsed. Workers are trapped, and we are mobilising to respond.
