Another Amotekun Killing: FUTA final year student shot dead in Akure

According to reports, operatives of the Amotekun corps allegedly shot and killed a final year student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on Saturday.

This incident led to a protest by students of the institution, who took to the streets of Akure to express their grievances.

It could be recalled that a similar incident occurred in July 2022, when students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, protested the killing of Folarera Ademola, an ND1 student of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, allegedly by an Amotekun operative.

The protest was led by the President of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Ondo State chapter, and saw the major roads in Akure blocked, including the road leading to the Governor’s office.

The deceased in the recent incident has been identified as Tope Elijah, a final year Economics student at FUTA.

According to Akinọla Elijah Temitope, the President of NANS Ondo State chapter, the deceased was attending a wedding ceremony when Amotekun operatives shot into the air to celebrate the groom, who was one of them. Unfortunately, the gunshots hit Tope and killed him.

The Amotekun operatives reportedly disappeared from the scene immediately after realizing what had happened, leaving some policemen to take the corpse to the hospital.

Temitope has called on the Amotekun corps to provide the officer responsible for the shooting and hand him over to the police for prosecution.

He has given the corps a 48-hour ultimatum to comply; otherwise, the students will begin another round of protests.

Efforts to reach the Amotekun authorities for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
